If you are under investigation or even suspect you may be, it may not be long before your relationships, your career and your reputation begin to crumble around you, and what you thought were safe havens built on solid foundations turn out to be nothing more than a house of cards.
With great power comes great responsibility, and with that responsibility comes access to many things the general public never sees. The line between what is legal and what is not, and what is common practice with a routinely diverted blind-eye increases the chance of a misstep or a whistleblower acting out in retaliation for some perceived slight.
The full details of the Governor's former right-hand man's relationship, termination and investigation by the FBI is speculation. It was not until the conclusion of April that Governor Cuomo found out his ex-aide, Joseph Percoco, was the subject of a federal investigation. Mr. Percoco's home was raided and records were subpoenaed by federal investigators. Allegations of misappropriation of money by companies under contract with the state were at the heart of the scrutiny, and both he and his wife were under a microscope.
This led to the Governor's rapid and public severance of ties between himself and Percoco. This sudden conclusion to a career and profound banishment of character may be the tip of the iceberg, but is devastating in and of itself after the aide devoted his lifetime to politics and the Cuomo family's legacy. When he was only 19, Percoco began working for Gov. Cuomo's father.
Percoco filed for bankruptcy in 1995, and it wasn't uncommon that he and his wife both lamented over their implication that the government salary he earned made it hard to make ends meet. Perhaps working in an environment of lavish wealth and privilege and having to do personally without, he felt the injustice and caved to illegal temptations--maybe a bonus here, an incentive there, to procure a contract.
No charges have been brought forth, but this very speculation can be incredibly devastating. If you have reason to believe you are under federal investigation, you may benefit from contacting a New York federal defense attorney to help minimize the fallout and address any charges that may stem from your investigation.
