Federal convicts spending more time incarcerated

Any and all criminal charges must be taken seriously. Conviction and incarceration can take years away from your life, and once you return to society, you will be saddled with a record that will permanently limit your opportunities. And this can be especially true if you are facing federal charges. You see, if the federal government is going to invest the time, money and resources it takes to arrest and convict you, it is only because it considers the acts you allegedly committed to be truly egregious.

And perhaps this is why the penalties for federal crimes have become so excessive. In fact, between 1998 and 2012, the average duration of time that federal inmates spent in prison rose from 17.9 months to 37.5 months. Yes, you read that right, federal inmates were being subjected to more than twice the prison time during the aforementioned time period. There were several policy choices that drove this increase, including the elimination of parole and mandatory minimum sentencing laws.

But it’s not just the time served that increased, annual federal prison admissions shot up by nearly 300 percent. In other words, more people received sentences, and those sentences were on average longer in duration.

What this means to you is if you should be arrested on a federal charge it is critical that you have experienced legal representation. This kind of representation can be provided by an experienced federal criminal defense attorney who can formulate a strategy aimed at protecting your rights and getting you the best possible outcome.
