Criminal defense: man charged in ex-wife’s alleged murder

| Feb 8, 2018 | Criminal Defense

A man is facing murder charges following the death of his former wife from apparent strangulation, according to local sources. New York authorities arrested the 46-year-old man and his 20-year-old daughter. The man is currently being extradited to New York from his home state, though it is unclear if he or his daughter have retained criminal defense representation at this time.

According to police records, the man’s former wife was discovered dead some time ago. Medical authorities say she died of strangulation, but police say they have reason to believe her death was deliberately set up to appear to be the result of suicide. It is unclear how the investigation proceeded from there, but the man was arrested the week of Jan. 29. His daughter was also arrested, as she was believed to have been an accomplice to the alleged murder.

The daughter, who is a student at a local university, pleaded not guilty to the charge of second-degree murder. She is being held with no opportunity for bail at a county jail. The man also faces second-degree murder charges. On Jan. 31, he waived extradition and is currently being returned to New York state.

Murder charges carry serious criminal penalties here in New York. If the man and his daughter are found guilty, they could face considerable jail time. This could be particularly damaging to the daughter, who would lose out on her current educational trajectory as a result. Their respective criminal defense teams will carefully review the facts of the case to build a compelling defense for each of them in advance of their trial dates.
