Criminal defense: New York police cadet faces DUI charges

| Mar 21, 2018 | Criminal Defense

A cadet in the New York Police Department could see his career in law enforcement end before it begins after an accident in the Bronx. New York authorities have charged the young man with DUI after his vehicle struck an ambulance while traveling the wrong way. He is currently suspended without pay, pending a court date, and he will likely seek criminal defense counsel to represent him during the case.

According to officers on the scene, the 21-year-old man was not on duty at the time of the crash, around 2:30 a.m. the morning of March 18, but he was giving friends a ride home. For reasons that have not yet been proven, he turned the wrong way on Grand Concourse and crashed into an ambulance. He apparently continued to drive the wrong way for some distance before being pulled over.

The actions taken by police on the scene were not elaborated upon in this report, but it has been confirmed that the man stands charged with drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident. Of course, in addition to possible criminal charges, this could jeopardize his standing in the cadet corps. His standing is not publicly known at this time.

Charges of this nature are particularly damaging to those in law enforcement, who can be barred from service in addition to the punishment of a criminal conviction. This is why the man’s New York Police comrades will have to prove he was drunk at the time of the accident, which requires evidence in the form of blood or breath testing. The cadet’s criminal defense team will attempt to ascertain the admissibility of any such evidence into court before the trial begins.
