Criminal defense: 3 charged after major theft

| Jun 21, 2018 | Criminal Defense

Prosecutors in Manhattan have charged three men, all of whom are suspected of being members of a notorious Bronx motorcycle gang, after a suspected cryptocurrency-based heist. New York prosecutors have charged all three men after they allegedly lured a 35-year-old millionaire into a fake Uber before kidnapping him back in 2017. Each individual is being held against $50,000 bail, and all three have retained criminal defense counsel.

According to court documents, a 38-year-old Department of Education worker as well as a 36-year-old and 37-year-old man are alleged to have lured a well-off cryptocurrency millionaire known to one of the three into a minivan they claimed was a livery vehicle on Nov. 4, 2017. Once inside the van, one of the men allegedly drew a weapon and demanded access to the victim’s Ether, a lucrative type of virtual money. The man was allegedly driven around town for several hours before giving up the passphrase used to access his account.

Surveillance tapes apparently later show one of the men breaking into the victim’s apartment, where the victim’s digital wallet was stolen. The three accused men are believed to have stolen some $1.8 million in cryptocurrency from the device, though most of the money was later recovered. All three men have pleaded not guilty to the alleged crimes.

Criminal defense representation for at least one of the men has suggested that charity work done on behalf of the community should play a role in the court’s bail decision. However, before New York authorities move to sentencing, they will need to prove the complicit action of all three men in the alleged crime. Each man’s defense team will carefully review any evidence, including the surveillance tapes, before they are admitted to court.
