Federal criminal defense: Man accused of terrorism

| Jun 26, 2018 | Federal Criminal Defense

A man is facing 28 federal charges following what has been called the deadliest terror attack since Sept. 11. The accused man, who is believed to have been responsible for an attack that killed eight people back in 2017, is now slated for a trial date in New York next year. He has retained federal criminal defense representation, but his attorneys have not spoken to the press at this time.

The attack took place on Halloween 2017 on a bike path near the site of the World Trade Center. The man is believed to have driven a pickup truck down the path, causing injuries and deaths along the way, before crashing into a school bus. When he exited the vehicle, he was shot on sight by a police officer on the scene. A total of eight people were killed and another 12 were sent to local hospitals with various injuries.

The man has entered a plea of not guilty to the range of charges filed against him. Among these are eight counts of murder in aid of racketeering, a further 12 counts of attempted murder on the same basis, attempting to provide material support to ISIS, and a single count of destruction of a motor vehicle. The latest indictments bring the total number of charges up to 28.

Terrorism is obviously a charged subject, especially here in New York where memories of 9/11 are still very fresh in the minds of citizens. However, it is a cornerstone of the justice system that even someone charged with such heinous crimes is entitled to a fair and impartial trial. He will be represented by federal criminal defense counsel, who will carefully examine the events leading up to the attack in an effort to build a compelling case in his defense.
