Federal criminal defense: New York man faces terrorism charges

| Feb 21, 2019 | Federal Criminal Defense

A man was arrested at Kennedy Airport after an alleged attempt to travel to Pakistan to join a terrorist group, according to U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman. The 29-year-old man was apprehended in New York and now faces serious federal charges pertaining to this alleged attempt. It is unclear at this time whether the man has retained criminal defense representation to support him in the upcoming case.

Very little information has been released about this case so far, but it has been confirmed that the man was arrested at Kennedy Airport on Feb. 7 as he attempted to board a flight to Pakistan. Federal authorities say he had articulated a desire to join Lashkar e-Tayyiba. This Pakistan-based group has been blamed for multiple high-profile attacks, including an attack in 2008 in Mumbai that claimed 168 lives.

Federal prosecutors say the man had attempted to join the organization online. He reportedly spoke to an undercover FBI agent, during which conversation he allegedly admitted to being prepared to “kill and die in the name of Allah.” The man now faces charges of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. If he is found guilty, he could go to jail for years.

In today’s politically-charged climate, it hardly seems surprising that here in New York and throughout the United States, authorities are taking a hard stance on terrorism. However, it is important to remember even in the face of strong emotions on the subject that every American citizen is entitled to a fair trial. This man will face the charges against him with a federal criminal defense attorney representing his interests in order to ensure his right to a fair trial is honored.
