Criminal defense: Retired officer faces drunk driving charges

A former New York City police officer is facing serious charges after a car crash that reportedly killed his passenger. The 48-year-old New York resident was arraigned on April 25 for an alleged drunk driving incident that claimed the life of a 32-year-old man. The former officer is due back in court on June 12, where he will be represented by a criminal defense attorney. It is unknown if he has sought legal counsel at this time.

According to the report, the man attempted to drive home after he and his two companions left a nightclub back in January. Unfortunately, his vehicle left the roadway and struck multiple trees before finally overturning on a private residence’s front lawn. His back-seat passenger, a 32-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene when officials arrived.

Police believe the man had been drinking prior to getting behind the wheel, which they say played a role in the tragic crash. He now stands charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, DWI, manslaughter and several other related charges. His bail was set at $125,000 in cash or a $250,000 bond. It is unclear whether the man is out on bail at this time or if he remains in police custody.

Charges of this magnitude carry a heavy penalty in New York. The retired officer could face considerable jail time if he is found guilty, despite his years of service to the state. While the burden of proof rests with the prosecution, it will still be up to his criminal defense representation to build a compelling case and to safeguard this man’s rights throughout the trial process.
