Criminal defense: Cardi B faces assault charges

| Jun 27, 2019 | Criminal Defense

A Grammy award-winning rapper is facing felony charges regarding an alleged fight that occurred at a strip club last year. Cardi B is charged with two counts of felony attempted assault for her alleged role in the fight in New York. Her criminal defense representation claims she did not harm any one, but she is set to appear at an arraignment the week of June 24 in Queens.

The details of the alleged incident were not made clear in the media report, but it has been confirmed that Cardi B (whose real name is Belacis Almanzar) was at a strip club in New York City on Aug. 29 when an argument apparently broke out. It appears Almanzar got into an altercation with a bartender, leading to a fight that involved thrown chairs, bottles and hookahs. The bartender is said to have suffered minor injuries, as did another employee.

Almanzar was offered a plea deal earlier in 2019 by the Queens District Attorney’s Office. However, this plea was rejected as she maintains her innocence. She has been indicted on two felony charges of attempted assault, as well as misdemeanor reckless endangerment and other lesser assault counts.

Assault charges, particularly felony charges, can carry serious criminal consequences, including jail time. However, the burden of proof rests with New York prosecutors to prove Almanzar’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Any evidence, including witness testimony, will be vetted by her criminal defense team in advance of a trial date, to assess its relevance and competency with objections made in court, as appropriate.
