Criminal defense: Teen accused of murder in New York

Police in the Bronx say they have arrested a teenager believed to be a gang member after a fatal shooting. The 17-year-old male has been arrested and charged by New York law enforcement with a number of crimess, including murder. He is being held without bail as of this report, and was set to be arraigned on Nov. 28. In court, a criminal defense attorney will represent him throughout the court proceedings.

According to the limited information released by police, around 8:30 p.m. the night of Nov. 13 a man believed to be part of a rival gang was outside an apartment building in the Bronx when the shooting occurred. The 17-year-old is believed to have opened fire with a handgun, shooting the victim in the leg and arm. The bullet that struck the victim's arm also pierced his chest, and after being rushed to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead due to that injury.

The teen was subsequently arrested and charged with gun possession, manslaughter, murder and robbery. Police have not said whether the robbery was the motive for the shooting. They have suggested that the shooting may have been spurred on by a long-standing drug feud between rival gangs. They point to the accused's long history of arrests for narcotics offenses as support for this claim.

However, the teen's past criminal record cannot be taken as an indication of guilt in this case. While New York prosecutors attempt to prove that he was in fact the shooter responsible for the murder, his criminal defense representation will carefully review all of the facts of the case to mount a meaningful defense. Every accused individual is entitled to fair and balanced proceedings, starting with the right to the presumption of innocence.
