Criminal defense: 13-year-old charged with murder

The tragic death of a freshman at Barnard College is being attributed to a 13-year-old boy, who has been charged with murder. New York authorities arrested the boy in Manhattan after the alleged attack. Police say they are searching for additional suspects in this case, with a second person being in custody, but no charges against that individual have been filed. There is no word as to whether the boy has been assigned criminal defense representation.

Police do not have a full understanding of how this event came to occur, but it has been confirmed that the victim was attacked sometime before 7 p.m. the night of Dec. 12. Authorities found the woman stabbed several times, after she left the building and attracted the attention of a security guard who called 911 on her behalf. Unfortunately, the woman did not survive the attack.

Apparently. a 13-year-old boy was caught trespassing in the building where the victim lived, and he was wearing clothing that matched the suspect's description. Once apprehended, the boy reportedly confessed to the murder of the victim, citing several other individuals as part of the effort. He told officers that he and two friends attempted to rob the woman, but the situation got out of hand and she was stabbed. He is now in custody, though he has not been officially arrested.

A murder charge is a serious infraction in the state of New York, particularly for a child who could face serious repercussions lasting into his or her adult life. This is why the boy will be represented in court by a criminal defense attorney who will carefully review the facts of the case. The goal will be to either see the boy exonerated of the crime of which he is accused or else see a reduction in the sentencing for said crime.
