A man accused of assaulting his 2-year-old child and the child’s mother is in custody in Brooklyn, according to police sources. New York Police Department officers have charged the man with child endangerment, assault and attempted murder for his alleged role in the attack. The man was set to be arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court as of Dec. 1, where he was likely represented by a criminal defense attorney.
According to the bizarre report, neighbors in the apartment building heard screams and called police. Officers arrived on the scene and found the 2-year-old child with a puncture wound to the temple, as well as the child’s 24-year-old mother suffering from lacerations on her forearm and leg. Both were taken to local hospitals, where the child was listed as being in serious but stable condition. The mother was treated and released.
After determining the injuries were made by a comb purportedly used by the boyfriend, officers arrested him and took him into custody. He was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. The other two children in the apartment, a 21-month old and an 11-month old, were thankfully unharmed and remanded to care of family.
An assault this egregious, particularly where the victim is a child, can elicit a strong emotional response. However, it is vital to the justice system in New York that the man be afforded a fair trial, which includes the guarantee of the presumption of innocence unless and until prosecutors prove otherwise. His criminal defense counsel will likely confer with medical professionals to assess the man’s mental state during the alleged attack as a possible avenue of defense.
