Criminal defense: man misses DWI sentencing

Those who face charges of driving while intoxicated likely know how serious the potential punishment may be. What they may not realize is just how long lasting the effects of a DWI conviction can be in several different facets of a person's life. This is why it is important that those charged with DWI ensure that they have a strong criminal defense strategy, particularly if they have had a prior conviction. This can be seen in the recent case of one New York man who did not attend his sentencing hearings for his DWI charges and is now facing serious jail time.

According to authorities, the man pleaded guilty earlier this year to two felony counts of DWI, felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and driving without an ignition interlock device. A judge warned him that if he failed to attend his sentencing hearing, or if he was arrested before the hearing, he could be punished with a significant jail sentence. Otherwise, he would receive a sentence of 2 1/3 years to 7 years.

The man apparently did not attend his sentencing hearing and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. He was charged with several more crimes, including resisting arrest. The judge sentenced him to 16 years in prison. Prosecutors claimed that this was justifiable and that the man was a threat to the public.

This man's case may have benefited from a comprehensive criminal defense. Even one DWI conviction may result in fines, jail time and a revocation of a person's driver's license. The person may also have difficulty obtaining a loan or securing employment in the future, potentially affecting that individual's life for years to come. Those who are facing DWI charges may want to consult a criminal defense attorney here in New York to determine the best course of action that may result in the most favorable outcome possible.
