Criminal defense: man faces attempted homicide charge

| May 16, 2020 | Criminal Defense

A 23-year-old man who was beaten by a crowd after allegedly shooting another man is now in custody, according to local police. New York officials in the Bronx arrested the man for attempted criminally negligent homicide after he allegedly shot another man with whom he was involved in a fight. Police also arrested a second man, who authorities say attempted to abscond with the alleged murder weapon. Arraignments for both men are pending at this time, and it is unclear whether either man has retained criminal defense counsel at this time.

According to the report, it appears the suspected man was involved in a fistfight with the victim, a 39-year-old man. Apparently, the younger man was losing the fight, whereupon he allegedly pulled a pistol and opened fire, striking his opponent in both thighs. A group of onlookers then reportedly descended on the shooter, attacking and beating him. While the man attempted to fend off his attackers, he also allegedly passed the gun to a 22-year-old man who was arrested by police a few blocks away.

The alleged shooter stands charged with attempted negligent homicide as well as reckless endangerment and gun possession. The man who apparently took the gun from the crime scene faces criminal possession of a weapon and ammunition. The victim is also facing a minor drug possession charge, and has been hospitalized for minor injuries.

A shooting is a serious crime, and New York authorities deal harshly with those they find guilty of it. If the man is convicted, he could face prison time for his alleged actions. This is why his criminal defense attorney will work to build a convincing case in his defense by carefully reviewing the facts of the case, as well as any evidence the prosecution wishes to bring before the court, all in advance of a trial date.
